Halo: Campaign Evolved Guide — What to Know and How to Use the New Mechanics

Early access for Halo: Campaign Evolved began July 23, with the full launch scheduled for July 28. This guide explains the confirmed changes and offers a sensible first route without spoiling the campaign.

Check Your Access and Edition First

Only editions that include early access can be played before July 28. At full launch the game reaches Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, while Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members receive access under their subscription terms.

The campaign supports shared progress across platforms, including story checkpoints, collectibles, and customizations when linked accounts are used. Confirm sign-in and synchronization before starting co-op so moving between devices remains reliable.

Three Operation: METEORITE Missions

Operation: METEORITE contains three prequel missions set before the landing on Installation 04. They expand the context of humanity’s encounter with the Covenant without replacing the main Halo: Combat Evolved campaign.

New players should follow the order presented by the game. Veterans may prefer seeing the familiar opening first and then measuring how the prequel changes its context. The added missions are not evidence that the original ending has been rewritten.

Sprint, Aiming, and Modern Controls

Campaign Evolved adds sprint and a modern control scheme while preserving Halo’s combat rhythm. Sprint is valuable for changing position and escaping danger, but constant forward movement makes enemy placement and cover harder to read.

Weapon aiming improves precision at medium range. Do not turn every encounter into a static lane: Halo still depends on the relationship between shields, grenades, weapons, and movement.

Nine Added Weapons

Nine weapons from later Halo games join the remake. They widen the answers to shields, armor, and range without eliminating the basic principle: plasma efficiently strips energy protection, while accurate kinetic fire finishes the target.

During a first run, mastering two clear roles is better than changing constantly. Keep one slot for shield removal or crowd control and the other for precise finishing. The exact choice depends on pickups and enemy composition.

Hijacking and Expanded Vehicle Play

Covenant vehicles can now be hijacked in combat. Approach only when movement is predictable and nearby infantry has been suppressed. Attempting a takeover under crossfire can cost more than destroying the vehicle.

The Warthog gains an extra passenger seat, and vehicle use has been expanded in selected sequences. In co-op, assign driver, gunner, and passenger roles before moving; random swapping destroys pace and leaves the group without cover.

How Co-op Works

Online co-op supports up to four players, while local play supports two. More participants do not automatically make Legendary easy: the team draws more attention, consumes ammunition, and can place everyone outside safety at once.

Agree who carries anti-shield equipment, who keeps a long-range option, and who controls vehicles. After a difficult arena, remain together until the next checkpoint triggers. Group discipline matters more than an individual kill count.

Difficulty and Navigation

Normal is a sensible starting point for learning shields, grenades, and Covenant behavior. Heroic emphasizes the tactical structure, while Legendary assumes arena knowledge and coordinated play.

Navigation and environmental readability have been improved. They support orientation without replacing attention to doors, lighting, and architecture. If the route feels lost, return to the last major combat space and inspect newly opened passages.

Settings Before the First Fight

Adjust field of view, sensitivity, motion blur, subtitles, and dialogue volume before a long mission. On PC, prioritize stable frame pacing over the highest peak number, especially for vehicle control and accurate fire.

Campaign Evolved is more than a visual layer over the old game. Missions, weapons, vehicles, and co-op change familiar decisions. Let the systems reveal their logic instead of playing as if this were an untouched 2001 release.
