GXG 2026: Guide to the Game Culture Festival in Pangyo

GXG 2026, a free urban game culture festival hosted by the city of Seongnam, will take place on September 11 and 12 at the Pangyo Station area. Now in its fourth year, the event features music concerts, cosplay experiences, indie game exhibitions, and new AI-focused programs, all accessible without tickets.

The festival, officially titled Game culture X Generation 2026, is co-organized by the Seongnam Industrial Promotion Agency and the Game Culture Foundation. Last year's edition attracted approximately 38,000 visitors. This year's slogan, "Enjoy games as culture!", reflects the event's goal of presenting gaming not just as an industry or content, but as a shared cultural experience for citizens. The program has expanded to include AI and subculture elements alongside the traditional stages, exhibitions, and lectures.

The festivities begin a day early with GXG Busking Time on September 10 from 5 PM to 9 PM at the Pangyo Content Street. Five teams from the gaming and IT sectors will perform street shows in a pre-festival atmosphere. The main event kicks off on September 11 with an opening ceremony on the main stage at Pangyo Station Plaza. After a performance by last year's GXG SOUND TRACK grand prize winner Uzugalchic Club, Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin will declare the festival open, followed by a celebratory stage by the hip-hop duo Dynamic Duo.

The centerpiece of the first day is the finals of the third GXG SOUND TRACK, a competition where artists recreate the emotions of games through their own music. Fifteen game companies provided themes from 16 titles, including Dungeon & Fighter, Blue Archive, MapleStory, League of Legends, Brawl Stars, Lineage, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Black Desert. Six teams advanced to the finals after a preliminary round. The total prize pool is 21 million won, with the grand prize of 10 million won going to the top team.

The six finalist teams have chosen specific character narratives to reinterpret musically. NOX presents "Bite the Lie," inspired by the Stalker Lea from Lies of P: Prelude. Catalog performs "Baekhwa," a technical rock number based on the MapleStory job Ren. Ha Hyun offers "Love Race," capturing the conflicting emotions of Blue Archive's Wakamo. The string band Momade brings "Nova X," a classical and modern interpretation of a PUBG: Battlegrounds match. Unreal Odyssey performs "Gloria," a rock ballad about the Female Swordmaster from Dungeon & Fighter. Finally, Solaris presents "Arise!", based on Azir's resurrection and the rebuilding of Shurima in League of Legends.

Winners will be determined by a combination of expert judging and public voting. Online pre-voting is open until September 10 via the official website and social media, where fans can listen to 30-second audio teasers for each team. On-site voting on the day of the finals will also contribute to the final ranking.

On September 12, the main stage will host the GXG Gala Concert. Ensemble Hill, the cello ensemble from Neople, will perform, along with a special stage by the National Gugak Center's creative ensemble, which will arrange game music in traditional Korean styles. The finalist teams from the previous day will also return to perform their competition pieces and free selections in a more relaxed setting.

The same day will also see the awards ceremony for the first AI Game Sound Design Challenge, hosted by Changjo Gongjakso and utilizing the platform Gamesound.ai. Sponsored by 12 game companies including Com2uS, Hagin, and AK Interactive, the challenge required participants to redesign the background music, sound effects, and voice for a selected official video. The top 10 finalists were selected from submissions closed on August 23. The total prize pool exceeds 17.45 million won, with cash prizes and hardware such as the Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch 2 as awards.

Off-stage, the largest attraction is IndieCraft, an indie game exhibition organized by the Korea Mobile Game Association. A total of 72 developers, including 52 domestic and 20 challenger teams, will showcase their games on the first floor of Pangyo Techwon Tower on both days. Since its inception, IndieCraft has hosted 412 developers and attracted 40,000 visitors, serving as a launchpad for hits like Sanabi, Devil Within: Satsugai, Mota Solo, and Arkana Tactics. This year's prizes include a grand prize of 40 million won for the domestic category and various awards for the challenger category, with funds usable for personnel and promotion without restrictions. An export consultation session will also be held on-site.

New subculture programs are concentrated on September 12. The Pokemon Card Game 2026 Seongnam City Battle Tournament will be held at the Topaz Hall on the 10th floor of Hyundai Department Store Pangyo. Participants who passed regional and on-site preliminaries will compete in the finals. This marks the first addition of card games and cosplay fan culture to the GXG lineup, which previously focused on music and indie games.

Cosplay content has been significantly expanded this year. The GXG Cosplay Experience Zone allows visitors to try on various costumes, take photos with professional photographers, and use AI retouching. Face painting and tattoo stickers are also available for beginners. The GXG Cosplay Gallery, a collaboration between Smilegate and RZCOS, will display costumes, weapons, and props from Lost Ark, featuring characters from Esther to the Legion Leaders.

A creator market will also be operated, featuring the Epic Seven x Illustra Fest Petit market, celebrating the 8th anniversary of Epic Seven. This includes creator booths and participation from cosplay teams like Eye Crown, CSL, and Illustra Partners. On the main stage on September 12, the finals of the Cosplay Dance competition will be held, followed by showcases from indie idol groups formed by influencers: Muro, Idol Collection, and Yoishoi. Artist Kkotgami, a former Valorant pro player, will also perform a live set combining games and music.

The venue is divided into three zones. THE PLAY at the north plaza of Pangyo Station features the GXG Play Lounge for console gaming, brand experience zones, and interactive programs like voice acting experiences and AI sound creation. GXG Campus Arcade on the second floor of Techwon Tower showcases games developed by students from Singu University and Dongseoul University. THE ART in the central plaza introduces original songs from GXG SOUND TRACK finalists from 2024 to 2026, along with an exhibition of corporate social responsibility activities in the gaming industry. A stamp rally connects the three zones throughout the two days.

The festival also includes GV2026 (Game Vision 2026), a career program inviting experts in game development, AI, and esports to introduce job roles and provide counseling to youth and young adults. All programs are free of charge. The schedule and venue map are available on the official GXG website. Pre-voting for the music competition closes on September 10.
