The GTA Universe: Everything to Know Before GTA VI
With the release of Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for November 19, 2026, less than a month remains. The game is set in the state of Leonida, modeled after Florida, with Vice City serving as its central hub. To fully prepare for the experience, it is essential to understand how the Rockstar Games multiverse is structured and how its different eras connect.
The GTA series is built upon the concept of 'universes' divided by graphical generations and narrative continuity. Rockstar Games distinguishes three main types: the 2D Universe (the era of classic top-down games), the 3D Universe (the dawn of 3D worlds), and the HD Universe (the modern era of high-definition realism). It is crucial to note that sharing a city name does not mean the stories take place in the same world. For instance, Los Santos in 1992 (San Andreas) and Los Santos in 2013 (GTA V) are entirely different cities in different realities.
Three Eras: From Pixels to Hyper-Realism
The 2D Universe laid the groundwork, introducing Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City. The transition to the 3D Universe with GTA III allowed characters and storylines to intertwine, such as connections between Vice City and Liberty City. However, after the 3D era concluded around 2006, the series made a massive leap into the HD Universe.
The HD Universe, which began with GTA IV, features a darker and more grounded tone. Unlike previous eras, this world evolves alongside reality; for example, the timeline in GTA Online progresses in sync with the real world, incorporating contemporary events.
GTA VI: A Sequel or a New Chapter?
While Rockstar has not officially confirmed if GTA VI belongs to the HD Universe, several details suggest it does. The 'Extended Look' footage featured Valentina, a character seen in the 2025 GTA Online 'Money Fronts' update. This suggests the game is a direct chronological continuation of the world established in GTA V. However, the Vice City in GTA VI is not the 1980s version from the 3D Universe, but a modern interpretation within a new reality.
The protagonists will be Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Lucia marks a significant milestone as the series' first female protagonist with her own voice and backstory. The plot follows their journey through the criminal underworld of Leonida, where small-scale crimes escalate into state-wide conspiracies.
