GTA 6 Netflix preview drove over 100,000 sign-ups in six-hour window

Rockstar Games' teaser for Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix has proven to be a massive driver of new subscriptions, securing the platform's third-largest subscriber spike of 2026 during its six-hour exclusive window. According to data from Ampere Analysis, the preview generated over 100,000 sign-ups in the US alone, outperforming nearly all live sports events and ranking just behind major releases like Stranger Things. This event highlights a shifting strategy where streaming giants are leveraging AAA gaming culture to re-engage lapsed viewers and compete directly with YouTube for gamer attention.

The impact of the preview extended far beyond simple subscription numbers. Ampere Analysis reported that more than 5% of users who had not used Netflix in the preceding 30 days returned specifically to watch the GTA VI trailer before consuming other content. This reactivation rate was significantly higher than any other series or film on the platform during the same period, demonstrating the unique pull of major gaming franchises.

In terms of raw viewership, the extended preview reached 31.1 million views globally within just four days. The engagement metrics were particularly striking: US mobile viewership for Netflix increased by 35% hour-over-hour, while web traffic surged by an impressive 125%. These figures underscore how effectively Rockstar's marketing campaign leveraged the streaming platform to reach a massive audience.

The ripple effects were also felt in hardware sales. In the UK, Nielsen IQ data revealed that the anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI drove a 33% increase in PlayStation hardware sales and a 34% rise in Xbox console sales. This suggests that the trailer successfully reignited interest in gaming ecosystems among consumers who may have been on the fence about upgrading their setups.

Katie Holt, a senior research analyst at Ampere Analysis, noted that while Netflix cannot directly compete with the biggest AAA game franchises by owning them, it can effectively vie for the attention surrounding them. "Trailers, reveals, and adaptations give Netflix a way into gaming culture without owning the games themselves," she explained. The GTA VI preview serves as a powerful example of this strategy, capitalizing on the immense scale and anticipation of the franchise.

Louise Wooldridge, senior research manager at Ampere Analysis, added that for Netflix, this success offers a dual benefit: it provides a way to compete with YouTube for gamer attention and brings lapsed viewers back to the platform. For Rockstar, opening GTA VI up to audiences via Netflix expands the franchise's reach beyond its traditional core demographic.

Ampere Analysis estimates that by the end of 2026, Netflix will have nearly 343 million subscribers worldwide, with approximately 16% of them not currently playing games. The success of this preview suggests that exclusive gaming content could be a key strategy for converting these non-gaming subscribers into active users.

Looking ahead, the industry is watching to see if Netflix will continue to invest in similar high-profile previews or adaptations. As streaming services seek new ways to differentiate themselves, the GTA VI event marks a significant milestone in the intersection of gaming and streaming media.
