GTA 6 to feature fuel management: why add it?

GTA 6 will feature a fuel management system: vehicles will no longer drive indefinitely, requiring players to visit gas stations. While leaks had hinted at this mechanic as early as August, details from Edge clarify how it will actually function in the game.

According to Edge, players will have access to fuel gauges and engine health readouts. However, Rockstar Games seems intent on ensuring that refueling doesn't become a tedious chore. Vehicles will be able to travel vast distances before running low, and the act of refilling will be quick and hassle-free.

The question remains: why implement it at all? The mechanic appears designed to add unpredictability to crime sprees. In previous entries, players could steal a car and drive indefinitely, but in GTA 6, there is a chance a stolen getaway vehicle might run out of gas during a high-stakes police chase. This adds a layer of strategic necessity to planning robberies and preparing escape routes.

This shift suggests Rockstar is leaning further into the life-simulation elements seen in Red Dead Redemption 2. While arcade racers like Forza Horizon or Need for Speed typically ignore fuel, and hardcore sims like SnowRunner make it a core pillar, GTA 6 is attempting to occupy a middle ground between the two.

As with any new mechanic, it is likely to be polarizing. Some players may find the interruption of gameplay for mundane tasks frustrating, while others might find the system too lenient to feel truly impactful. Given that the series is titled Grand Theft Auto, any changes to the fundamental experience of driving and vehicular mayhem will undoubtedly be a major point of discussion.
