Glowmade on independence after King of Meat shutdown

Following the shutdown of King of Meat by Amazon, Glowmade has announced its next project, Rogue Fortune. Studio head Jonny Hopper states that the developer remains financially independent and is targeting a 2027 release for the new single-player title.

The closure of King of Meat earlier this year was part of Amazon Game Studios shifting its strategic focus. While such publisher drops often lead to layoffs or studio closures, Glowmade reports that the split was amicable. Jonny Hopper, co-founder and studio head, emphasizes that the company retains ownership of all its intellectual property and maintained financial discipline during the partnership. This approach allowed the studio to build a reserve fund, ensuring it is not dependent on external funding for its future operations.

Hopper describes the studio's current status as its strongest position to date. The team has successfully shipped a title, possesses the necessary technical skills, and holds sufficient capital to sustain development. This financial independence allows Glowmade to operate without the pressure of immediate revenue generation, enabling a focus on long-term stability and creative execution.

The studio’s next project, Rogue Fortune, is a single-player game that combines roguelike mechanics with inventory management puzzles inspired by Tetris. Players collect relics shaped like Tetris pieces and slot them into a board to unlock various powers and abilities. The game features procedurally generated maps, but replayability is driven by the branching options available through inventory combinations. Progress, including levels, unlocks, and weapons, persists after death, a standard mechanic in the roguelike genre.

Development on Rogue Fortune began in January 2026, a month before Amazon announced the shutdown of King of Meat. The project was initiated with a deliberately limited scope. Hopper explains that the initial prototype team consisted of developers without artists for the first three months. This constraint was intended to focus the team on core mechanics and gameplay ideas rather than visual presentation.

Rogue Fortune was revealed at Gamescom 2026, and Glowmade is targeting a 2027 release date. This contrasts with the development timeline of King of Meat, which was originally pitched in 2020 with a target release in September 2021, but eventually launched in October 2025. Hopper describes the new project as a "palate cleanser," aiming to create a fun and engaging experience without the extended development cycles and high costs associated with larger titles. The studio set an internal goal to build the core idea within 12 months, using this constraint to focus the team’s efforts.

Following the announcement of King of Meat's shutdown, Glowmade management informed the team internally, allowing the studio to rapidly shift its focus. Hopper acknowledges that the transition was challenging, moving from the high of shipping a game to the lows of a project cancellation. However, the studio used this period to reflect on its strengths and weaknesses. The team now has experience shipping a game, which Hopper identifies as a significant achievement that provides a solid foundation for future projects.

With the end of the Amazon partnership, Glowmade has adopted a startup-like mindset. Hopper states that the studio must balance its financial independence with the urgency of not having infinite resources. The goal is to remain independent and self-sustaining by working on two games at once and releasing one title every year. This cadence allows the studio to maintain a steady pipeline of projects while managing resources effectively.

Glowmade utilizes its own technology stack to power its games, which imposes certain limitations on scope. Hopper notes that while using off-the-shelf engines like Unreal offers benefits, the studio’s custom engine is tailored to its specific needs. These limitations serve as guide rails, preventing the team from pursuing overly ambitious projects that may not align with their capabilities. The studio’s leadership, including design director Mike Green and art director Adam Sibbick, has defined the company’s ethos around creativity, aiming to make games that are cool, beautiful, and interesting.

Hopper indicates that Glowmade is open to working on other intellectual property or co-development projects, provided they align with the studio’s creative criteria. The company currently has the luxury of choice due to its financial position, but remains interested in opportunities that resonate with its team and vision. This flexibility allows Glowmade to explore new directions while maintaining its core values and operational independence.
