Glen Schofield: "Krafton forced us to release The Callisto Protocol"

The creator of the legendary Dead Space series, Glen Schofield, has opened up about the turbulent development of The Callisto Protocol. In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, he detailed the friction with parent company Krafton, claiming that management decisions significantly impacted the game's outcome and his own career trajectory.

A Release Forced by Management

Schofield identified the decision regarding the release window as the most significant point of contention. According to the developer, the studio had originally promised a March 2023 release, a timeline intended to provide a buffer for delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Krafton decided to push the launch forward to December 2022.

This decision came at a time when the studio was struggling with the pandemic's impact. Schofield noted that while the team was dealing with significant health challenges—including a period where four to six employees contracted the virus monthly—the company pushed for an earlier release. Operational and Financial Burdens

Beyond the scheduling conflicts, Striking Distance Studios (SDS) faced significant organizational hurdles. Because Krafton lacked an established publishing and marketing infrastructure for single-player packaged games at the time, SDS was forced to build these functions internally.

The mandate to support older hardware added further strain. Schofield stated that the requirement to release on PS4 in addition to PS5 cost the studio an extra $20 million. This was exacerbated by the global semiconductor shortage, which made shipping development kits to 200 employees a logistical nightmare.

Mismatched Expectations and the End of an Era

The commercial performance of the game fell short of the publisher's high expectations. While analysts like Eugene Investment & Securities had projected cumulative sales of 5 million copies through 2023, actual reports indicated sales reached approximately 2 million copies. The launch was further complicated by the release of the Dead Space remake by EA, which arrived a month later to critical acclaim.

Schofield remained dedicated to the project until the end, overseeing 86 patches and the completion of all DLC to fix technical issues. However, he claims Krafton viewed the game as a
