Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition Review: Slightly Flawed, but Still Endlessly Fun

Exactly one year after the initial launch, Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition arrives in its definitive form. This package brings the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion and the new Most Wanted roguelike mode. By offering two distinct experiences—a narrative-driven expansion and a standalone endgame mode—the release aims to maximize replayability. But does this combination truly elevate the journey of Atsu?

Echoes of Sekigahara: Reflections of the Past

The story expansion transports players to the Ashoro Foothills, where Atsu reunites with Nagato, an ally from her time at Sekigahara. Together, they face the Vipers, a gang led by The Snake, one of the Yōtei Six.

Mechanically, Echoes of Sekigahara introduces three notable elements. First is Heavy Weapons—non-permanent, limited-use tools scavenged from the environment or fallen foes. These are essential for breaking the armor of heavily armored enemies that standard weapons struggle to damage. Second is the introduction of active status effects; for instance, arrows lodged in the body prevent the use of Spirit points for healing until manually removed. Third is the addition of new enemy tools, such as the meteor hammer, which can incapacitate the player. While these additions inject fresh tension into combat, the core loop remains largely unchanged, making the innovation feel incremental rather than revolutionary.

Narratively, the expansion excels. The title Echoes of Sekigahara serves as a metaphor for both the return of Nagato and Atsu's own self-reflection. Through flashbacks, we see a more human side of the protagonist beyond her persona as the Ghost. The visual progression is equally striking: the Ashoro Foothills shift from a suffocating, fog-drenched landscape under the Vipers's control to a vibrant, healing environment as the player liberates the region.

Most Wanted: Roguelike Combat Without the Narrative Weight

Most Wanted is a purely single-player roguelike mode. Players choose from four hunters: Atsu (the all-rounder), Oyuki (the kusarigama assassin), Nagato (the ranged specialist), and Jin Sakai (the versatile master of stances). As players progress, they earn Mon, a permanent currency used to unlock hunters, upgrade skills, and purchase charms.

The depth of the mode lies in perk synergy. Rather than simple stat boosts, perks introduce new mechanics—such as triggering a lightning strike after a jump attack or detonating flash bombs upon killing enemies. However, compared to the free Legends mode, which featured a dedicated storyline and co-op gameplay, Most Wanted feels somewhat casual. It lacks a narrative framework, operating on a simple loop of selecting a boss, completing a run, and returning to the lobby. Additionally, crafting truly game-breaking builds is difficult, preventing the explosive power-scaling often found in the genre.

Ultimately, Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition takes the base game half a step further. While Most Wanted might feel less substantial than the free Legends mode, the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion provides a solid narrative bridge that enriches the main campaign. It is a thorough, solid release for those looking to experience the full scope of Atsu's journey.
