From UI Rollback to Tactical Overhaul: How 'FM27' Reclaimed Its Core

After the radical UI overhaul in Football Manager 26, which met with mixed reactions from the community, Sports Interactive has decided to pivot. In Football Manager 27 (scheduled for release on November 11), the focus shifts back to restoring intuitive control and deepening gameplay mechanics. We spoke with the studio's leadership about why the UI 'rollback' is not a step backward, but a way to refocus on what matters most: the football simulation experience.

The primary issue with FM26 was that the attempt to create a modern, mobile-centric interface introduced unnecessary 'friction' into the user experience. Players found themselves spending too much time navigating menus rather than managing their clubs. For FM27, Sports Interactive has prioritized three principles: efficiency (minimizing clicks for desired actions), familiarity (a UI that feels as comfortable as any other professional software), and predictability (ensuring players immediately understand the result of their clicks).

Tactics and Simulation Depth

A major highlight is the new 'Tactical Effectiveness' system. This is an evolution of the previous 'Tactical Familiarity' mechanic, designed to better reflect how a manager's vision is actually executed on the pitch. The goal is to create a seamless connection between tactical instructions, training, and the performance of players across first teams, youth academies, and national squads.

The developers have also refined AI decision-making in the transfer market. In long-term saves—where real-world stars are eventually replaced by 'newgens'—maintaining league dynamism is crucial. The updated AI allows clubs to make smarter, more nuanced choices: for instance, top-tier clubs might prioritize experienced veterans to mentor young squads, while talented prospects might choose consistent playing time at clubs like Brighton over sitting on the bench at Arsenal or Liverpool.

Visuals and Technical Details

The transition to the Unity engine has enabled significant improvements in stadium presentation. FM27 places a heavy emphasis on matchday atmosphere; crowds now wear club kits, and their attire changes according to environmental conditions like rain or heat. Additionally, the developers clarified that player weight is no longer displayed in the database. This decision stems from the fact that weight is often an estimated value rather than a publicly disclosed metric, and it does not directly impact the game's collision physics.

Regarding modding and user-generated content, Sports Interactive maintains a neutral stance. While licensing restrictions prevent the studio from officially supporting third-party skins or mods, they stated they have no intention of interfering with the community's creative activities.

Looking Ahead

The studio acknowledged several ambitious concepts that are not yet implemented. One such idea is 'Dynamic Potential,' which would allow a player's growth ceiling to increase based on the quality of their teammates and training facilities. While this remains a long-term design objective rather than a feature for FM27, it highlights the studio's direction. Other possibilities, such as a 'Referee Cam' or more advanced visual flows, remain on the horizon for future exploration.
