Epic Games' Disney project reportedly shifts to 'AI-First' development
Epic Games is reportedly shifting its production model for an upcoming Disney title to an “AI-first” approach. This strategic pivot, according to Bloomberg, has resulted in a delay for the unannounced Star Wars and Marvel shooter.
Reports suggest that developers on the project have been instructed to rely heavily on generative AI, particularly for coding and art assets. An email reviewed by Bloomberg allegedly shows the game's director telling the team that art should be created using “full AI workflows” and that they should move away from “hand-written code.”
The shift in development methodology has directly impacted the project's timeline. Originally targeting a March release, the game has been delayed to an undisclosed date as the team implements these new production standards.
While Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, recently commented on the company's general stance regarding AI technology, he did not specifically confirm or deny the details of the Bloomberg report concerning the Disney project. The move highlights the growing, yet controversial, integration of generative AI within high-profile AAA game development.
