Embark Studios is testing a PvE mode in Arc Raiders
Embark Studios is bowing to a growing segment of its community by trialing a PvE mode in their extraction shooter Arc Raiders. The decision comes as a response to a significant number of players who prefer cooperative play and fighting machines over engaging in player-versus-player combat.
In an official announcement, Embark Studios stated that a "large and growing group" of Raiders enters the Rust Belt specifically for the co-op experience and the ARC, rather than for fighting other players. The studio emphasized that this group has become a core part of the community, making it essential to support their playstyle rather than forcing them to adapt to the existing PvP-centric loop.
Data collected by the studio supports this shift. While the percentage of pure PvP players has remained stable at 34% since launch, the number of "mixed" players—those who act as allies but occasionally engage in combat—has shrunk. Most of these players are now opting for full-time cooperative play, outnumbering the purely competitive crowd.
The experimental PvE mode will be virtually identical to the standard Arc Raiders experience, with a few notable adjustments:
- Zero player-to-player damage.
- Lower loot value to reflect the reduced risk of encountering other players.
- The exclusion of certain special events, such as Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate, and Frigate, which were designed around the unpredictability of human encounters.
To maintain tension in the absence of the PvP threat, Embark Studios has slightly adjusted the behavior of ARC robots. If a player is downed, they must remain still; attempting to crawl may cause the machines to re-acquire them as a target. The developers clarified that the goal of this test is not to artificially inflate the difficulty of PvE, but to properly accommodate a dedicated part of their player base.
