Elon Musk Confirms SpaceX Will Exclusively Use Nvidia GPUs with Vera Rubin NVL72
Elon Musk stated that SpaceX and xAI will exclusively use GPUs from NVIDIA. According to the founder, the Vera Rubin architecture is the best available, and the specialized NVL72 server node offers a design superior to standard racks. Musk also announced plans to launch a space-optimized version of this system next year.
Exclusive Partnership with Nvidia
During SpaceX's earnings call, Elon Musk confirmed the company's strategy of fully transitioning to NVIDIA hardware. He noted that the Vera Rubin architecture is the best currently available for building AI computers. Musk emphasized the value of long-term cooperation and partnership with the corporation.
The specially designed NVL72 VR[200] system attracts attention with its cable-less compute tray construction. This approach eliminates numerous manual connections, reducing installation errors and improving system reliability.
Cosmic Launch Next Year
In contrast to the Space-1 module, which envisages deploying several Rubin accelerators in orbit, Musk announced plans to deploy the full NVL72 system in space. This refers to the Starmind AI satellite, which will be an optimized version of the NVL72 server.
"We expect to start launching this next year," Musk stated. He believes that the design of the NVL72 VR[200] computer is a radical simplification of the normal NVL72 rack, making it ideal for operation both on Earth and in orbit.
Context: Nvidia's Dominance in AI
Historically, xAI has used only Hopper and Blackwell accelerators to train Grok models. While there were rumors of testing AMD solutions, there has been no public confirmation of using non-Nvidia accelerators in production. The official exclusivity statement appears more like a formality confirming NVIDIA's dominant position in the AI infrastructure segment.
However, deploying the NVL72 system in space remains an ambitious project. Questions regarding cooling and reliability of such powerful nodes in the space environment remain open, despite the high performance offered by 36 Vera CPUs and 72 Rubin GPUs.
