Dune: Awakening on PS5 preview review: solo onboarding meets survival

Context

Dune: Awakening is already known as a large-scale survival MMO set on Arrakis, but the PS5 version raises a separate question: how clearly can it welcome players who did not follow the PC launch and do not want to drown in systems immediately?

The official PlayStation Blog post highlights two key points: the PS5 release is set for September 22, and the game is adding a new single-player experience. That does not remove the online nature of Dune: Awakening, but it changes first contact.

Solo onboarding

The strongest idea is giving players room to learn without the pressure of a large server. For survival games, this is critical. If the opening hours overload players with UI, resources and threats, many leave before the depth becomes visible.

A solo path can work as tutorial, atmospheric introduction and pacing filter at the same time. It needs to teach water, shelter, movement, sandworm danger and survival economy through situations, not only tooltips.

Console fit

On PS5, Dune: Awakening will be judged not only by content but by control. A survival MMO with inventory, building and combat must feel readable on a controller. If menus and construction are fast, the console version can become the main way to play for part of the audience.

The visual foundation is strong: sand, scale, vehicles, base silhouettes and the threat of open desert. But interface and server stability will decide whether that foundation turns into a comfortable long-term habit.

Early verdict

This is not a final review of the release build. Still, the direction makes sense: Funcom is not merely porting the game to PS5, it is trying to soften entry into a demanding genre. If the solo mode truly teaches players how to live on Arrakis, the September release can earn a second wave of attention.
