Steam Games on Android: DroidDeck Turns Smartphones into Handhelds
The new DroidDeck app aims to transform standard Android smartphones, tablets, and handhelds into gaming consoles with an interface similar to the Steam Deck. The key advantage is that users do not need to install SteamOS or obtain Root access; the entire process runs within the Android environment.
How it works
DroidDeck relies on the Proton compatibility layer and the FEX emulator. While Proton translates Windows API calls to Linux-compatible ones, FEX handles the emulation of x86 programs on Arm64 architecture. The application essentially functions as the Arm64 Linux version of the Steam client, utilizing Vulkan as the graphics API. This setup brings the official Steam Big Picture mode to Android, offering a much deeper feature set than the standard mobile Steam app.
Requirements and Compatibility
Currently, DroidDeck is not available via the Google Play Store and must be installed manually via an APK file. The minimum requirements include Android 9.0 or newer and an "Adreno-730-Plus" GPU or better. Users will also need approximately 4.5 GB of free storage for the application itself, plus additional space for game installations.
The developers maintain a compatibility database covering 36 devices. The following hardware is currently listed as "Tier 1 Verified":
- Ayn Odin 2
- Retroid Pocket 5
- Ayaneo Pocket S
- Smartphones powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Gen 3
Performance Benchmarks
Initial benchmarks performed by YouTuber ETA Prime on a Redmagic 11 Pro equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip show promising results. For instance, Skyrim Special Edition achieved roughly 60 FPS at medium settings in 1280×720 resolution.
