Dota 2 in 2026: Guide for Returning Players — What Changed and Where to Start

Dota 2 isn't a game you can step away from for a year and return to unprepared. Valve regularly upends the meta. If you're returning in 2026, here's what you need to know.

Patch 7.37 Key Changes

The neutral item system is reworked: they drop less frequently but with higher quality — each neutral item matters more. Three new heroes have been added over the past year: Ringmaster (support disabler), Kez (carry counter), and one more announced after publication.

Map Changes

The river in its original form is gone — replaced by two Focus Stones in the center, control of which grants a temporary team-wide buff. This has shifted early-game action from runes to neutral points.

Recommended Heroes for Returning Players

Carry: Wraith King (simple resource management), Dragon Knight (straightforward). Mid: Lina (familiar mechanics), Viper (forgiving). Support: Crystal Maiden (hasn't changed fundamentally), Ogre Magi (stable in any meta).

First Steps

Play 5-10 bot games to refresh mechanical skills. Learn 2-3 new Aghanim's Shard effects on your favorite heroes — they significantly change playstyle. Don't rush ranked: adaptation in unranked matches will give you the context you need.
