DLSS 5 mod pushes RTX 5090 to 647W, as power connector hits 91.7°C
Testing unofficial neural rendering mods for DLSS 5 in Cyberpunk 2077 reveals that the technology can place immense strain on GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards. The increased computational demand significantly raises both power draw and temperatures at the 12V-2x6 power connector.
Power Spikes and Limit Breaches
Researchers at QuasarZone investigated how the DLSS 5 mod affects the power consumption of RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 Founders Edition cards. When the mod was enabled in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K resolution, the RTX 5090 saw a 13% increase in average power draw, reaching 582.7W, with peaks hitting 646.7W.

These short bursts of power are particularly significant as they exceed both the card's 575W power limit and the 600W rating for the 12V-2x6 power cable. Without the DLSS 5 mod, the RTX 5090 exhibited a peak power draw of 571.7W.
Thermal Risks for Connectors
The increased power consumption translates directly into higher temperatures. Thermal imaging showed that the 12V-2x6 connector temperature rose by 10.8°C with the mod enabled, reaching a peak of 91.7°C. This is uncomfortably close to the 105°C maximum rating for these connectors; any power imbalance across the pins could potentially lead to cable melting or permanent hardware damage.

The RTX 5080 showed a much safer profile due to its lower 360W power limit. The connector temperature on the 5080 model increased by 6.4°C to reach 52.2°C, posing no significant risk to the hardware.
It is important to note that these results were achieved using an unofficial mod, as DLSS 5 is not yet officially supported in Cyberpunk 2077. An official implementation from NVIDIA might offer better optimization, potentially reducing the overall strain on the GPU and its power delivery components.
