ASUS ROG Matrix Radeon RX 5700 XT prototype surfaces seven years after cancellation
An unreleased ASUS graphics card based on the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT has appeared in a recent video. The prototype is believed to be a cancelled ROG Matrix model that never made it to the market seven years ago.
The footage, shared by Chinese hardware creators on Bilibili and supplemented by details from UNIKO’s Hardware, suggests this was an attempt to develop a high-end Navi 10 solution. While ASUS released the ROG Strix RX 5700 XT in 2019, an equivalent Matrix version remained a prototype and never reached retail shelves.
Hardware Upgrades and Technical Changes
The prototype utilizes a triple-fan cooling solution similar to the retail ROG Strix RX 5700 XT, but with several key hardware enhancements:
- Cooling System: The heatsink features seven heatpipes instead of the six found on the standard model, and a larger copper base covers both the GPU and the GDDR6 memory chips.
- Power Delivery: The PCB reportedly includes additional VRM phases. For context, the retail ROG Strix model used an 11+3-phase design.
- Connectivity: The prototype appears to have more display connectors than the standard retail version.
Additionally, the device features a different Device ID and a substantially higher base GPU clock. While the retail ROG Strix operated at 1,770 MHz (base) or 1,840 MHz (OC mode), the prototype was designed for even higher operating frequencies, though its actual performance remains unverified.
Context of the Unreleased Card
In early 2019, ASUS introduced the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which featured an integrated liquid cooling system. The discovery of this prototype suggests that the company was experimenting with a premium RDNA-based flagship, but ultimately decided not to proceed with the Matrix branding for the RX 5700 XT series. ASUS has not officially confirmed the identity of this prototype or the reasons behind its cancellation.
