Asha Sharma announces Xbox Labs project to explore new technology
Xbox games chief Asha Sharma has announced the formation of Xbox Labs. This new R&D initiative is designed to explore emerging technologies, specifically focusing on the possibilities of game remixing and technical adaptation.
In her introductory statement, Asha Sharma highlighted recent trends where games are being rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on unintended hardware. This includes porting Windows PC builds to Apple Silicon, running games in browsers via WebAssembly and WebGPU, and even remixing elements of major titles into the source code of other games.
To explore these possibilities, Asha Sharma has asked "Xbox" CTO Scott Van Vliet to establish Xbox Labs. The group will consist of a small team of game makers, engineers, and scientists tasked with turning emerging ideas into experiences for players and developers. The initiative aims to build in the open, learning from community actions and measuring success through increased player engagement and creation.
While Microsoft has clarified that the use of AI will not be mandatory, the announcement comes amid growing interest in AI-driven decompilation. This technology can drastically reduce the time required to convert a game's source code into a human-readable and editable format. However, some developers remain skeptical, arguing that traditional non-AI tools are already highly efficient and that automated approaches might compromise game stability.
Specific action plans and a list of upcoming projects for Xbox Labs have not yet been disclosed.
