Arrowhead CCO sees potential in generative AI parody
Arrowhead's Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt has shared a vision for a potential game that parodies modern generative AI technology. While he finds the concept intriguing, he clarified that such a project would not be part of the Helldivers 2 universe and would require a quirky, upbeat tone rather than a dark one.
During a recent interview regarding the studio's future, Pilestedt suggested that AI has been a worthy subject for satire since the 1980s. He envisioned a scenario where players are stuck in a world ruled by an AI overlord acting as a deity. However, he noted that since the Automatons already fulfill the studio's need for robotic enemies in Helldivers 2, a game centered on AI would have to be a completely new title.
The tone of such a project is crucial. While Helldivers 2 uses satire to deliver messages about fascism through a lens of dark humor, Pilestedt believes an AI-themed game should be "quirky and fun" instead of "doom-laden." He emphasized that in Arrowhead's approach, humor serves to deliver the message rather than hide it.
While the creative side explores satire, the leadership remains pragmatic about the technology itself. CEO Shams Jorjani has previously noted that the industry's debate on AI is often polarized—ranging from extreme automation in QA to total rejection by developers fearing for their livelihoods. Jorjani suggested the reality likely lies in the middle, provided that intellectual property rights are strictly respected.
Regarding the studio's current roadmap, Pilestedt addressed why Arrowhead is not currently developing Helldivers 3. The reason is strategic: the studio wants to avoid resetting the momentum and success currently enjoyed by Helldivers 2, opting instead to focus on other unannounced projects.
