36-core M5 Ultra rivals Threadripper in Geekbench 7 test
A Geekbench 7 listing has surfaced for the upcoming Apple M5 Ultra processor. The 36-core configuration shows multi-core performance that places it in the same bracket as AMD's high-end workstation CPUs.
The benchmark submission identifies a 36-core layout consisting of 12 super cores and 24 P-cores, reaching a peak clock frequency of 4.6 GHz. The test was performed on a system with 256 GB of unified memory running macOS 27.0. It achieved 3,774 points in single-core testing and 52,516 points in multi-core testing.
These multi-core scores put the M5 Ultra in close proximity to AMD Threadripper Pro workstation-class processors. For context, a 64-core 9985WX scored 56,118 points, while a 96-core 9995WX reached 50,911 points. However, as individual Geekbench submissions vary, these figures should not be viewed as representative averages. Furthermore, Geekbench is a short-duration benchmark and does not simulate the sustained, heavy workloads typical of professional workstation tasks.
If these results align with Apple's internal claims of up to 1.3x higher multi-threaded performance compared to the M3 Ultra, the new chip will represent a significant jump for the Mac Studio lineup. Official specifications and the release date for the M5 Ultra-equipped hardware remain unconfirmed.
