AOC adds circular light polarisation to its new 4K 240Hz monitor

AOC has enhanced its 27in Agon Pro AG276UZ gaming monitor with circular polarisation technology. The company states this improves viewing comfort by mimicking natural light. This new variant maintains the original model's core specs, adding a polarisation film that turns the LCD's linear light into circular light.

How it works

Standard LCD monitors rely on traditional linear polarisers to control their pixels, which forces light to vibrate in a single direction. This light can appear harsh and fatiguing to many users. Circular polarisation aims to reduce eye fatigue by attempting to reproduce the random scattering of natural light.

To achieve this, manufacturers add a circular polariser layer, also called a quarter-wave plate (QWP), right on top of the linear polariser. This layer shifts the light's wave phase by 90°, twisting it into a spiral shape that is easier on the eyes.

Additionally, circular polarisation improves visibility when using polarised sunglasses, which can cause blackouts and distortions when used alongside traditional, linearly polarised monitors.

Specs and availability

In terms of specs, the Agon Pro AG276UZ retains identical characteristics to its original variant, including a 3840×2160 UHD resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and 1ms GtG response times. The dual-mode feature is also available, letting you choose between a sharp 4K resolution at 240Hz or a fast FHD (1920×1080) resolution at 480Hz.

AOC claims the IPS panel covers 100% of the sRGB and 99% of the DCI-P3 colour gamuts, with factory calibration producing a Delta E under 1. Brightness is rated at 450nits, with a contrast ratio of 1,100:1.

Connections include two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 2.1 input, and USB 3.2 sockets. While pricing for western markets is unrevealed, the Hong Kong store lists it at HK$4,099 (£385). Make sure to check that circular polarisation is clearly marked, as both variants are otherwise identical.
