AMD Hits Record x86 Market Share, Cutting Into Intel's Lead
According to fresh data from Mercury Research, AMD has reached a record high in the global x86 CPU market share for Q2 2026, successfully narrowing Intel's lead across every segment.
The overall x86 landscape saw an unexpected surge with total shipments growing over 10% sequentially. AMD catapulted its share to 34.1%, while Intel remains dominant at 65.9% but faces a decline from the previous year. Notably, AMD achieved a historic milestone by exceeding 30% of the client market for the first time.

In specific segments, AMD captured 34.9% of the desktop market and 28.9% of the mobile market. While the industry faced a downturn due to higher prices and limited GPU supplies, AMD's decline was milder than Intel's. In the data center space, x86 server CPUs grew nearly 20% year-over-year, with AMD climbing its share to 34.5%. Mercury Research President Dean McCarron noted that if calculated using only direct competitors like Xeon SP versus EPYC, AMD's share would be even higher at 46.4%.

Despite these gains, Intel maintains a strong position with its CEO Lip-Bu Tan highlighting major investments in foundry business and process nodes. Recent leaks suggest Intel's upcoming Nova Lake architecture will deliver massive performance gains, while the company reported its strongest revenue growth in 15 years for server operations.
