AMD has drawn attention to a screenshot shared by its senior marketing director, Saša Marinković, showing the Ryzen 5 5500 at the top of Amazon's CPU best-sellers list. The budget chip temporarily beat the flagship Ryzen 9 9800X3D, a feat that might seem surprising given the current market trends.
The DDR4 Platform Resurgence
The fact that a four-year-old processor on Zen 3 architecture and DDR4 memory is leading sales charts speaks volumes. While the industry moves toward AM5 with DDR5, users are still gravitating toward older solutions. Among the top 25 best sellers on Amazon, three slots belong to Intel, one to a Thermal Grizzly AM5 contact frame, and the rest are split between AMD's DDR4 and DDR5 CPUs.
Experts link this success to the current memory price crunch. The AM4 platform remains an accessible alternative for those unwilling to pay premium prices for new components. Additionally, several motherboard vendors have confirmed increased production of chipsets for older platforms due to demand.
Technical Specifications of the Leader
The Ryzen 5 5500 is a budget processor with six cores and 12 threads built on Zen 3 architecture. It boosts up to 4.2 GHz and comes with a Wraith Stealth cooler. However, it has limitations: it uses reduced L3 cache (16 MB) and supports only PCIe 3.0.
In a recent $100 CPU shootout, the Ryzen 5 5500 showed performance that lagged behind Intel Core i3-14100F in games when using DDR4 memory. Nevertheless, for users with an existing AM4 motherboard, it is an excellent upgrade option without needing to buy a new motherboard.
Currently, the Ryzen 9 9800X3D has reclaimed the top spot on Amazon's best-sellers list. However, the success of the Ryzen 5 5500 demonstrates that demand for budget solutions with DDR4 remains high even amid rising component prices.
