AMD explains lack of new Ryzen 3 CPUs: focus shifts to premium segment

If you have been waiting for a refresh of the AMD Ryzen 3 lineup, you might be out of luck. The company has provided insight into why new quad-core CPUs in this segment are becoming increasingly rare, citing a strategic shift toward high-performance gaming hardware.

Market shifts and the rise of laptops

Speaking to the Japanese outlet Tech Plus, Travis Kirsch, director of client product management at AMD, addressed the absence of new Ryzen 3 products. While not explicitly confirming the end of the line, Kirsch explained that the market size for these budget components is no longer significant enough to be a primary focus. While AMD still aims to provide some SKUs for budget-conscious users, the company's "main battleground" has moved elsewhere.

Kirsch, drawing on his experience from the Athlon era, noted that budget chips used to represent a massive portion of the market. However, the landscape has changed due to the dominance of laptops, which have effectively taken over the entry-level price ranges that desktop quad-core CPUs once occupied. Consequently, AMD is now prioritizing the premium, high-performance gaming market.

Design and cost challenges

Beyond market dynamics, there are significant engineering hurdles. Kirsch highlighted the difficulty of producing cost-effective quad-core chips that include integrated graphics. For value-oriented processors like the Ryzen 3, the current chiplet-based architecture—utilizing a CCD and an I/O die (IOD)—is not economically viable. Since integrated graphics are a mandatory requirement for this price bracket, the manufacturing costs make it difficult to maintain profitability in this segment.

For users seeking affordable desktop performance, the current market offers alternatives like the 6-core Ryzen 5 5500, which provides a more substantial performance cushion than a hypothetical new budget quad-core chip might offer.
