AMD EPYC Verano: New SB1-Sockel Hints at Dedicated AI Server Platform

While standard server CPUs focus on maximizing core counts and memory bandwidth, AMD is working on a different paradigm. Leaked information from cooler manufacturer Dynatron points toward a new processor family, EPYC Verano, designed specifically to act as host processors for large-scale AI systems. The emergence of a new socket designation, SB1-Sockel, is the primary indicator of this upcoming platform.

Specialization and Zen 6 Architecture

AMD has officially categorized Verano as part of its sixth-generation EPYC lineup. Unlike the standard Venice processors (the general-purpose Zen 6 CPUs for HPC and servers), Verano is intended to be optimized for seamless integration with future AMD Instinct accelerators. Current reports suggest the platform could feature up to 72 Zen 6 cores with clock speeds reaching 5 GHz.

A major technical shift involves the adoption of LPDDR5X memory using the SOCAMM2 form factor. This approach aims to bridge the gap between efficiency and serviceability: while LPDDR offers superior power efficiency compared to traditional server memory, the SOCAMM2 standard allows for modular, replaceable components rather than permanent soldering on the motherboard.

A New Paradigm for AI Infrastructure

The introduction of the SB1-Sockel suggests a potential departure from traditional socket designs. Industry discussions speculate that Verano might utilize a BGA (Ball Grid Array) package to enable more compact PCB layouts and improved thermal management within high-density AI racks. Such a design would minimize the host CPU's power footprint, leaving more energy budget for the accelerators themselves.

If realized, AMD will be moving toward a highly integrated infrastructure where the CPU serves as a specialized coordinator for workloads and data movement, while the heavy lifting is handled by accelerators. This specialized platform is expected to arrive in 2027.

The hardware details surfaced in Dynatron's product catalog, which lists an active cooler, tentatively named SB1-4U-ACTIVE. The entry explicitly mentions support for the AMD EPYC Verano platform on the SB1-Sockel. While AMD has yet to officially confirm the mechanical or electrical specifications of this socket, the existence of dedicated cooling solutions indicates that the platform is actively in development.
