Alien: Isolation Designer Reveals How Dinosaurs Behave in The Lost Wild

Gary Napper, the game director at Great Ape Games behind The Lost Wild — previously known for his work on Alien: Isolation — has shared insights into how different dinosaur species will behave in the game. The team aims to reflect real-world behavioral traits, from the relatively calm diplodocus to the highly aggressive allosaurus.

Napper explained that the development team leveraged modern scientific understanding of prehistoric creatures. For instance, allosaurs were known for their erratic and aggressive nature, with fossil evidence showing teeth embedded in rocks, logs, and other animals — suggesting they attacked indiscriminately. This behavior will be reflected in gameplay through distinct species-specific reactions.

The developers are avoiding overt UI indicators like cones of vision or exclamation marks. Instead, players will learn to read subtle behavioral cues: how creatures react to their environment, time of day, weather, and lighting conditions. Some dinosaurs may appear unaware of the player, while others might be provoked by noise or movement.

The Lost Wild is set in the early 2000s on an island owned by the mysterious Japanese tech corporation Idehama, which purchased the land for energy research. Players will explore abandoned bases featuring retro technology from the 1990s and early 2000s, including CRT monitors, chunky keyboards, pagers, and devices resembling mini-disc upload points.

The project began as a Crysis mod before evolving into an Unreal Engine build that caught the attention of publisher Annapurna Interactive. The game will launch in 2027 on PC and PlayStation 5.
