Activision to remove Itaewon tragedy footage from Modern Warfare 4 cinematic
Activision has apologized to victims of the Seoul crowd crush and promised to remove controversial footage from the Modern Warfare 4 intro cinematic.
Activision has officially responded to the backlash in South Korea regarding the opening cinematic of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The publisher stated that the use of real-world news footage was not intended to reference or trivialize the Itaewon disaster of 2022.
The controversy stems from a sequence in the game's intro that features several seconds of news broadcast footage. The clip shows emergency workers performing CPR on a person during the aftermath of the crowd crush in Seoul during Halloween celebrations. According to SBS News, this specific footage triggered significant backlash.
In an official statement, Activision emphasized that they approached the subject matter with care and respect during the development of Modern Warfare 4. The company explained that the news coverage was used to establish the game's fictional narrative, which centers on a North Korean invasion of South Korea, and was not meant to reference any real-world tragedy.
The 10.29 Itaewon Disaster Bereaved Families Association welcomed the decision to pull the footage, though they noted that Activision has yet to issue a direct apology to the victims, according to the BBC. The controversial footage is expected to be removed via an update scheduled for November 12.
