Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve – Annihilation Battle mode confirmed, story trailer revealed
Bandai Namco Entertainment has provided a first look at the story trailer for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, confirming the return of the franchise's fan-favorite mode, Annihilation Battle. The game is set to launch on PS5 on October 2, 2026.
The new trailer offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the crew aboard The Endurance amidst an ongoing conflict. Players will engage in intense dogfights against elite Sotoan ace squadrons, including the Shadows Unit led by Shadow 22, as they fight to protect the Federation of Central Usea.

A major highlight of the reveal is the confirmation of the Annihilation Battle mode. Featured in Mission 7, this mode tasks players with destroying critical enemy infrastructure, such as solar power plants, oil tanks, air bases, and ammo dumps. Producer Manabu Shimomoto stated that this mode embodies the core pillar of the series: allowing players to eliminate enemies based on their own tactical judgment. The upcoming installment also introduces enhanced chain destruction mechanics, where destroying flammable objects like oil tanks can trigger explosions that devastate surrounding structures.

The trailer also introduced two formidable new threats:

- Megafloat Fatsia: A massive six-kilometer-long marine megafacility off the coast of the Republic of Sotoa. This artificial island serves as a military factory and supply station, equipped with CIWS, SAM batteries, railguns, and a network of UAV sensor nodes.
- Tonitrus Spear: A Sotoan satellite weapon operating from a low orbit of 500 km. This kinetic weapon uses mass and gravity to launch metal rods, destroying targets through pure kinetic energy without the fallout associated with nuclear strikes.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is confirmed for a 2026 release on PS5. A Deluxe Edition is also available for pre-order, offering early access and exclusive bonus items.
