'Xbox is not for sale,' says CEO Asha Sharma

Amid Microsoft's ongoing struggles with Xbox, the gaming division is not for sale, according to CEO Asha Sharma. Sharma made the statement during an interview with the New York Times on Wednesday.

Despite the challenges facing the gaming division, Sharma emphasized a commitment to long-term growth. She stated that the company will do whatever is necessary to ensure success, which includes exploring the right partnerships and operating models.

This statement addresses recent speculation regarding the division's future. A report from The Information in June indicated that while Microsoft had no immediate plans to spin off Xbox, it had not ruled out restructuring the unit as a wholly-owned subsidiary—which could facilitate a future sale—or forming a joint venture with other partners.

While Sharma's comments refute rumors of a direct sale, they do not rule out a structural reorganization. One possibility is a model similar to LinkedIn, which has operated as an independent subsidiary since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2016. “We’ve got a long way to go with Microsoft, and we're going to take the long-term view,” Sharma told the New York Times.
