Warlock: D& D developers aim for organic exploration over BG3 comparisons
While the shadow of Baldur's Gate 3 looms large over modern RPG discussions, Invoke Studios is focused on carving out a different niche for their upcoming title, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons. Rather than a heavy emphasis on branching dialogue trees, the developers are prioritizing a reactive open world where magic serves as the primary tool for both combat and environmental interaction.
During a recent Gamescom demo, the studio showcased the core gameplay loop centered on the protagonist, a warrior named Kaatri. Having made a pact with the witch Tasha, Kaatri utilizes a blend of melee combat and magical abilities to navigate the dark, fog-shrouded realm of Darkon, a region within the Ravenloft setting of the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
The magic system is designed for creativity and improvisation. Instead of static damage numbers, spells are intended to interact dynamically with the surroundings. For example, players can use Tasha's Leash to manipulate objects, such as snatching a lantern to ignite undergrowth or pulling masonry from walls to create makeshift platforms when combined with Black Tentacles. Other abilities like Misty Step allow for non-linear traversal through obstacles, while Eldritch Blast provides long-range utility. This synergy extends to elemental interactions, such as using wind or rain to manipulate the battlefield.

Combat is described as a "dance" between melee and magic. Players can equip two weapons—such as swords or warhammers—and seamlessly weave spells into their combat flow. This is supported by a companion, an imp named Skev, who provides utility through skills like lockpicking and distracting enemies, while also possessing his own narrative motivations within the story.

In terms of world design, Invoke Studios is moving away from the traditional Ubisoft-style map cluttered with waypoints and exclamation marks. Darkon is intended to be a dense, exploration-driven environment where players must rely on NPC conversations and environmental cues to uncover secrets and side quests. While the game features non-linear quest structures, the developers clarified that Kaatri is a fixed character with a pre-written narrative, meaning players won't be shaping her morality through dialogue choices as seen in other RPGs.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is slated for a 2027 release on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
