TP-Link Announces First Consumer Wi-Fi 8 Routers

The announcement follows TP-Link’s earlier statement this year that it would be the first to launch standalone and mesh Wi-Fi 8 devices. The Archer 8 Ultra is a tri-band router equipped with 18 internal antennas. TP-Link claims the device will deliver aggregate wireless speeds of up to 19 Gbps. It also features 10 Gbps wired connectivity, although the company has not yet clarified whether this speed applies to both WAN and LAN ports or only to the latter.

For users requiring broader coverage in larger homes or offices, the Deco 8 Ultra offers a tri-band mesh solution with aggregate speeds of up to 22 Gbps. This system also includes 10 Gbps wired connectivity. TP-Link typically sells its mesh systems in two- or three-pack configurations; the Deco 8 Ultra 3-pack is rated to cover up to 9,800 square feet. Unlike the Archer model, the Deco 8 Ultra will not be available until Q1 2027.

Technical Features and Design

TP-Link is keeping specific chipset details under wraps for now, but the company confirmed that its Wi-Fi 8 products will utilize hardware from Broadcom, MediaTek, and Qualcomm. The router’s performance is supported by a feature set TP-Link calls StabilityEngine. This leverages core Wi-Fi 8 technologies, including Enhanced Long Range (ELR) and Distributed Resource Units (DRU). These features are designed to improve wireless connectivity, particularly for low-power IoT devices located at the edge of a home’s coverage area.

Additional technologies such as Unequal Modulation (UEQM) and Modulation and Coding Schemes (MCS) are also included to maintain uninterrupted wireless traffic in high-interference environments. Beyond the technical specifications, TP-Link is introducing a new design language for the Archer 8 and Deco 8 lines. Gary Chang, TP-Link’s industrial design chief, explained that the company shifted its focus from building networking equipment to designing for the home. "When a router’s design becomes something people want to display, it ends up exactly where it performs best," Chang stated.

Availability and Regulatory Status

TP-Link plans to expand its Wi-Fi 8 portfolio by Q2 2027 with the addition of a Roam 8 travel router, range extenders, and PCIe/USB client adapters. However, the availability of these products in the United States remains uncertain. As of today, TP-Link has not obtained FCC approval to release all-new products in the country. This stands in contrast to competitors like Amazon and Netgear, which have received conditional approval from the FCC Covered List.

For now, TP-Link has only confirmed that preorders for the Archer 8 Ultra will open in "select regions" on September 30. The company has not provided a specific timeline for U.S. market entry or detailed pricing for the new Wi-Fi 8 lineup.
