Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition adds 50 factions but breaks old mods
Creative Assembly has announced Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition, a comprehensive remaster of the 2011 strategy title. The release is set for October 13 across Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG.
This 64-bit edition serves as an all-in-one package, including both Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai expansions. Technical upgrades include updated lighting, shadows, and textures, alongside 1440p and 4K UI scaling. The edition will also feature Japanese and Chinese voice acting and localization, as well as what the developers describe as "modernized controls."
The most significant gameplay addition is the inclusion of over 50 minor factions. However, this update comes with a trade-off for the modding community: because of the architecture shift, existing mods will no longer work with the updated version. To compensate, the Complete Edition will introduce in-game mod support via Mod.io.
Current owners of the original game have several options. From October 13 to November 12, a 75% discount will be available for those looking to upgrade to the Complete Edition. Once the remaster launches, the original version of Total War: Shogun 2 will no longer be available for purchase, though current owners can still download and install the legacy version. Additionally, existing players will receive certain legacy DLCs for free upon the release of the new edition.
