Tenebris Somnia: A horror mix of 2D adventure and live-action
Tenebris Somnia takes the concept of genre-bending to a new level by welding a retro-styled 2D adventure with full-on live-action film. Executive produced by the team behind Faith: The Unholy Trinity, the game uses the contrast between lo-fi pixel art and polished cinematography to create a deeply unsettling experience.
At its core, Tenebris Somnia plays like a slow-paced point-and-click adventure. Players control a young woman investigating her former boyfriend's apartment, searching for clues about a disturbing situation. The gameplay follows a traditional old-school loop: moving between screens, examining points of interest, collecting items like mysterious books or empty bottles, and combining them in an inventory to solve puzzles and unlock doors. The pace is deliberately methodical, requiring players to backtrack and scrutinize their surroundings.
The game's standout feature is its seamless integration of live-action sequences. When players solve a puzzle or unlock a new area, they are often rewarded with high-production FMV clips featuring real actors in elaborate costumes and makeup. These scenes, crafted by filmmaker Andrés Borghi (known for the horror film When Evil Lurks), feature surreal imagery such as two-faced figures and grotesque entities. These cinematic moments provide a sense of physical presence and weight to the horror, making the pixelated threats feel much more intimate and terrifying.
However, the game's structure presents some challenges. The stop-and-start rhythm can occasionally deflate the tension, and the necessity of revisiting previous areas may diminish the sense of discovery. While the narrative—centered around a horror short film created by the protagonist's ex—offers potential for depth and layers, the writing currently feels more functional than gripping. Nevertheless, the ambitious marriage of 8-bit aesthetics and cinematic realism makes Tenebris Somnia a highly imaginative entry in the indie horror scene.
