Synology launches cheaper 2-bay NAS DiskStation DS725neo+ with non-ECC memory
Synology introduces the DiskStation DS725neo+, a budget-friendly 2-bay NAS for home and SOHO use powered by a Ryzen R1600. The model replaces ECC memory with non-ECC DDR4 SODIMM to lower costs, while retaining core specs like dual 2.5GbE ports and an M.2 slot.
Synology has officially launched the DS725neo+, a budget-friendly 2-bay NAS aimed at home users and small businesses. Priced at ¥107,900 in Japan, this new model positions itself as an affordable alternative to the previous DS725+ by swapping out its memory specifications.
At the heart of the DS725neo+ is AMD's Ryzen R1600 processor. This chip features a dual-core architecture with four threads, clocked at a base frequency of 2.6GHz and capable of boosting up to 3.1GHz. It provides the necessary processing power for typical file serving, media streaming, and light virtualization tasks without the premium cost of higher-end Ryzen models.
The most significant change from its predecessor is the memory configuration. Synology has replaced the ECC (Error-Correcting Code) DDR4 SODIMM found in the DS725+ with standard non-ECC DDR4 SODIMM modules. While ECC memory offers data integrity protection against bit flips, it comes at a higher price point and is generally unnecessary for consumer-grade NAS devices where occasional data corruption can often be recovered via RAID redundancy or snapshots.
Despite the memory downgrade, the physical chassis remains largely identical to the DS725+. The unit retains its two drive bays, supporting both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives. It also includes two M.2 2280 slots dedicated to system cache or expansion. Connectivity is robust for a budget device, featuring one 2.5GbE LAN port for fast network transfers and one standard 1GbE port.
Internally, the DS725neo+ ships with 4GB of RAM, though it supports upgrades up to 32GB via a single available slot. The physical dimensions measure 166 x 106 x 223mm, and the unit weighs approximately 1.51kg. Additional features include USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a USB Type-C expansion port, and a single 92mm cooling fan to maintain stable temperatures.
For users looking for a cost-effective entry point into Synology's ecosystem without paying for ECC memory or higher-tier CPUs, the DS725neo+ offers a compelling value proposition. It maintains the familiar DiskStation design while delivering modern Ryzen performance at a lower price point.
