Switch 2 jailbreak method discovered, but it has limitations

Much like the original Nintendo Switch generation, the Nintendo Switch 2 is facing jailbreak attempts shortly after its market debut. Developer Pepsipu has discovered a method to bypass system protections, though the exploit currently faces significant technical limitations.

Exploit mechanism via legacy content

Rather than relying on a browser exploit, this breakthrough targets software from the previous generation. The developer utilized SmileBASIC, a title that remains compatible with the new hardware. A flaw in its BASIC interpreter allowed for arbitrary read/write access in userspace.

This was then used to escalate into the Switch 2 filesystem sysmodule. By manipulating IPC handles, the developer was able to run a custom executable with ordinary sysmodule permissions, achieving native code execution.

Limitations and outlook

Currently, the jailbreak is a tethered, software-only method. To trigger the exploit, a user must run a Switch 1 game on the Switch 2 hardware. Due to these requirements, the method does not yet pose a threat of rampant piracy, giving Nintendo some breathing room.

However, as AI is increasingly used to identify vulnerabilities across the digital landscape, the discovery of further exploits for the new console generation remains a matter of time.
