Super Mario Speedrunner in Cosplay Nears Perfect Run
Even as Nintendo celebrates the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., the speedrunning community continues to push the boundaries of the classic title. During a recent livestream, Niftski came tantalizingly close to achieving a perfect run, delivering a record-breaking performance while dressed in full cosplay.
Niftski, a prominent figure in the Super Mario Bros. speedrunning scene with multiple world records, has secured a new Any% world record (completing the game by any means necessary). His time of 4 minutes, 54 seconds, and 299 milliseconds improves his previous record by 0.33 seconds. The feat was performed in full Mario cosplay, a challenge triggered by a $1,000 donation from a viewer.
While the run was historic, it stopped just 33 milliseconds short of the theoretical perfection established by tool-assisted speedruns (TAS). This gap is equivalent to exactly two frames. Given that Niftski also holds the fastest warpless and glitchless records, he remains the primary candidate to eventually bridge this tiny gap and achieve a human-perfect run.
Niftski noted that staying in character actually helped him relax and focus during the run. This pursuit of perfection highlights the enduring vitality of the speedrunning community, which continues to find new ways to challenge even the most established gaming classics decades after their release.
