SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta: fixes for Steam Machine, VRR, and VR streaming
Valve has released the SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta, marking a step closer to the wide availability of version 3.9. This update moves the software from the Preview channel to Beta and focuses on resolving streaming issues, VRR bugs, and hardware compatibility problems.
Streaming and VRR Improvements
A significant part of the update addresses Steam Remote Play. Valve has fixed an issue where Remote Play would fail on Steam Machine if the system booted without an external display connected, making headless setups more viable for streaming-focused users. Additionally, Steam Frame users will no longer see unintended frame caps when streaming VR titles from a Steam Machine.
The update also corrects behavior regarding VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). Previously, the “Disable Frame Limiter” toggle was not functioning correctly when VRR was enabled; this has now been restored to its intended behavior.
Hardware Compatibility and Stability
The update includes critical fixes for the latest hardware, specifically addressing issues where certain games, such as ELDEN RING and DARK SOULS™ III, failed to run on Intel Panther Lake CPUs. It also addresses boot screen corruption on Intel PTL+ devices.
Other notable fixes include:
- Preliminary brightness control support for the Lenovo Legion Go 2;
- A workaround for a firmware issue on some ASUS devices that caused excessive fan speeds upon waking from sleep;
- Resolving boot speed regressions and disappearing boot logos introduced in earlier 3.9 previews;
- Fixing virtual keyboard input issues in Game Mode for specific languages.
On the technical side, the Arch Linux base has been updated, and the Linux kernel has been rebased to version 7.2. Developers will also note that preliminary support for hibernation has been added, though it is not yet exposed in the Game Mode UI.
