Star Wars: Zero Company will be brilliant because XCOM is brilliant
Turn-based tactics strategy Star Wars: Zero Company is set to release on August 27, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by Bit Reactor and Respawn under Electronic Arts, the game merges the squad-management depth of the XCOM series with a gritty Star Wars narrative.
A Perfect Pairing
The genre of turn-based tactics relies on managing a small squad of permanently-killable allies. Star Wars: Zero Company applies this formula to the galaxy far, far away. Game director Greg Foertsch described it as "the perfect pairing," noting that the sci-fi debt owed by many XCOM-like games makes this combination feel inevitable.
Narrative and Atmosphere
The game features a linear narrative with light-touch storytelling. Players take on the role of a scoundrel named Hawkes, leading a rag-tag crew through missions that blend typical tactical encounters with noir thriller elements involving gangland Hutts and Republic intelligence officers.
New Mechanics
Unlike traditional XCOM titles, Star Wars: Zero Company includes third-person exploration in the base. The metagame allows players to upgrade facilities like the medbay and armory. A new "bonds" system lets operators gain XP together, unlocking skill points and cross-training options.
Combat System
Each operator has three action points for movement and attacks. The game introduces an "assists" mechanic where one operator can shoot alongside another for free. Enemies evolve over time, with some charging powerful rockets or using grenades, adding variety to encounters.
