Wolverine Is PS5-Only Forever: What's Behind Sony's U-Turn and What It Means for the Market

'Wolverine will not come to PC' — PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst's words at the June 2, 2026 State of Play became the evening's most discussed announcement. It's a sharp reversal from a six-year established practice.

Sony is saying: 'We won't force you to buy a PS5 — we'll make you want to.'

Starting with Horizon Zero Dawn (2020), Sony systematically ported its first-party titles to PC: Horizon Forbidden West, God of War, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima — all eventually came to Windows. This generated revenue without canonical risks to the console business.

Why Is Sony Reversing Course?

Analysts point to several possible reasons:

  1. Restoring PS5 value. PlayStation 5 needs content that cannot be obtained anywhere without buying the console. Marvel's Wolverine is exactly that anchor.
  2. Signal to Marvel. Marvel (Disney) has an interest in platform exclusivity that makes a game a major event. Large licensing deals often include platform exclusivity requirements.
  3. Competing with Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft actively pushes 'why buy PS5 when Xbox + PC?' Sony's answer: 'because this is available nowhere else.'

Is This a Trend or a One-Off?

Unknown for now. Hulst did not say Sony is abandoning PC ports altogether. Wolverine is a specific decision. But if it pays off commercially, Sony may apply the same logic to other major exclusives in 2026–2027.

Impact on PC Gamers

If the trend holds, some major PlayStation first-party content will become unavailable on PC. This isn't catastrophic for the PC market, but may stimulate PS5 demand among those who've delayed buying a console.

Market Context

The PC market is actively growing. Steam is breaking records, portable PC gaming is thriving. Sony is consciously limiting its audience — a risky but understandable strategic bet.
