Sony Ramps Up PlayStation 6 Spending as PS5 Nears 100M Sales Milestone

Sony is shifting its financial focus toward the future. As the PlayStation 5 approaches a massive 100-million-unit sales milestone, the company is simultaneously ramping up investments in its next-generation hardware. During a recent earnings call, Sony leadership confirmed that research and development for the successor to the PS5 is on schedule, signaling a significant increase in spending for the upcoming fiscal periods.

According to Sony CFO Lin Tao, the company's investment in next-generation R&D is expected to have a substantial impact on spending during the second half of the current fiscal year. Furthermore, substantial investments in the new platform are slated to continue into the next fiscal year, which begins in April 2027. This shift in spending is partly due to the timing of expense recognition; some development costs originally anticipated for this fiscal year will instead be accounted for in the next, according to the company's financial reporting.

PS5 Market Position: Declining Hardware Sales, Growing Engagement

While the focus shifts to what comes next, the PlayStation 5 continues to maintain a strong presence in the market. Sony's latest financial results reveal that cumulative PS5 shipments reached approximately 97.9 million units worldwide as of September 30, 2026. This follows a steady climb from 93.7 million units at the end of March. However, the pace of hardware sales is slowing; the 2.6 million units shipped in the second quarter represents a 35% decline compared to the 4 million units moved during the same period last year, a trend Sony attributes to the natural lifecycle stage of the console.

Despite the deceleration in hardware shipments, the PlayStation ecosystem remains highly active. Monthly active users reached 127 million in September, marking a 7% increase year-over-year. Total playtime also saw a 4% uptick. Software sales for both PS4 and PS5 titles reached 88.2 million units during the quarter, up from 80.3 million in the previous year, suggesting that while fewer new consoles are being sold, the existing user base is more engaged than ever.

The Next Generation: Rumors and Speculation

While Sony has not officially confirmed the name of the next console—though a name other than PlayStation 6 would be a significant departure from tradition—nor has it disclosed specific hardware specifications or a formal budget, rumors regarding the internal architecture continue to circulate. Unconfirmed reports suggest a potential configuration featuring an eight-core AMD Zen 6 CPU and an RDNA 5 GPU with up to 54 compute units. There is also speculation regarding memory, with some suggesting up to 40GB of GDDR7 on a 160-bit bus. Additionally, rumors persist regarding a handheld device, potentially named the PlayStation "Canis," which is rumored to run PS5 games natively.
