Sony’s rumored PlayStation 6 handheld, codenamed "Canis," faces a potentially steep price tag that could dampen gamer enthusiasm.
According to hardware leaker KeplerL2, hitting a $600 price point for the next-gen portable console is currently impossible. This speculation aligns with comments from Hideaki Nishino, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, who stated the company avoids selling hardware at "substantial losses." Combined with rising component costs, this suggests the PS6 handheld could easily exceed $1,000.
The primary driver behind these inflated prices is not custom silicon or advanced displays, but a severe shortage and price hike in LPDDR memory. Massive AI datacenter buildouts have consumed global memory supplies, driving up costs for chips essential to next-gen hardware. Consequently, the rumored "Canis" system may command a hefty premium just to pack meaningful performance.
While Microsoft has confirmed Project Helix is in development, Sony and Microsoft have not revealed detailed console roadmaps yet. With current market trends pushing PC gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck higher, whether players will shell out well over $600 for a Sony-branded device remains an open question.
