Security Updates for Older AMD and NVIDIA GPUs
Owners of older NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards (specifically from partner Sapphire) should prepare for unexpected updates. These releases are focused on addressing security vulnerabilities rather than gaming optimizations.
Security Patches for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta
Since October 2025, NVIDIA has ceased providing Game-Ready drivers for the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures. However, the company has committed to providing security updates for these GPUs until October 2028. The newly released GeForce Security Update Driver 582.78 for Windows 10 and 11 addresses this requirement.
The release notes indicate that most addressed vulnerabilities are classified as "high" severity. This includes a critical issue affecting the Virtual GPU Manager (vGPU) in Linux, rather than the display driver itself. The update is recommended for users of the following series:
- GeForce 10 Series (including GTX 1080 Ti, 1070, 1060, 1050 Ti, etc.);
- GeForce 900 Series (GTX 980 Ti, 970, 960, etc.);
- GeForce 700 Series (GTX 750 Ti, 750, 745);
- NVIDIA TITAN series (including TITAN Xp and TITAN X Pascal).
New vBIOS for Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3) from Sapphire
The situation for AMD users is more specific: current reports indicate that only models manufactured by Sapphire are affected. The manufacturer is providing a firmware (vBIOS) update to fix an unspecified security issue identified in collaboration with AMD.
The update is available for various Radeon RX 7000 ( RDNA 3) models, such as the RX 7600, RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 GRE, RX 7900 XT, and RX 7900 XTX. The update process requires the AMD Adrenalin driver to be installed and takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. As with any BIOS update, power must not be interrupted during the procedure. It remains unclear whether other manufacturers will release similar security patches for their versions of these cards.
