Over 5000 nits: Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Full Review

Following the major update to the Classic series last year, it is now the Ultra's turn. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 keeps much of its predecessor's silhouette but brings significant internal upgrades. With a faster processor, a larger battery, and a display that reaches unprecedented brightness levels, this smartwatch aims to redefine the premium wearable segment. We put it to the test to see if it truly lives up to the hype.

Design and Build: Refined Titanium

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 maintains the 47mm titanium chassis of the original, but the execution feels more polished. Samsung has refined the underside, resulting in a much better fit on the wrist with less wobbling. The design is more harmonious and premium, moving away from the heavy two-tone aesthetic of the first generation toward a more cohesive look. The texture of the case is also smoother to the touch.

On the side, you'll find three buttons, including one extra compared to standard models. There is no physical rotating crown; instead, a raised, non-rotating bezel surrounds the screen. The watch weighs 85.7g with the 24mm proprietary strap attached. While it remains a substantial piece of hardware, the improved ergonomics make it much more comfortable for all-day wear.

Display: A New Benchmark in Brightness

The standout feature is undoubtedly the Super AMOLED display. Samsung has pushed the limits, achieving a peak brightness of 5,053 nits in our tests—a massive leap from the 3,000 nits of the previous model. This puts Samsung in a league of its own, surpassing both Apple and Huawei. This extreme brightness ensures perfect legibility even in direct sunlight, while the 5.51-nit minimum brightness prevents glare during nighttime use.

However, there is a caveat for sensitive users: the display uses Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) at a low frequency of 60 Hz to dim the screen. This can lead to eye strain or headaches for those susceptible to screen flickering, a common issue in high-brightness AMOLED panels.

Performance and Battery Life

A major shift in the internals is the move to the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset. This upgrade is immediately noticeable; the interface is incredibly responsive, and demanding tasks like app installations or launching navigation are significantly faster than on the previous Exynos-based model. During our testing, the system remained smooth, with only a brief freeze during a software update.

The 800 mAh battery provides a significant boost. In our real-world testing—running with Always-on Display, automatic workout detection, and 24/7 monitoring (without using eSIM)—the watch lasted between two to three days. Using eSIM and making calls without a paired phone will noticeably reduce this runtime. Charging is handled via a proprietary wireless pad, taking about 90 minutes for a full charge from zero.

Health and Wear OS Ecosystem

Samsung continues to lean heavily into its Energy Score feature, which uses various metrics like sleep consistency, HRV, and skin temperature to provide a daily readiness score. The sensor accuracy is exceptional: we measured a mere 0.25% error in heart rate and a negligible 0.01% error in blood pressure (though the latter requires regular calibration with a standard cuff). It also includes a unique feature to warn users about high noise exposure.

The Wear OS 7 experience is top-tier, offering a vast selection of apps from Google Maps to various music streaming services. However, a significant drawback remains: key health features like ECG and blood pressure monitoring are locked to the Samsung ecosystem, requiring a Samsung smartphone to function. This remains a major hurdle for users of other Android devices.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a powerhouse that sets a new standard for display brightness and sensor accuracy in the smartwatch market. It is an ideal companion for athletes and tech enthusiasts who demand the best hardware. However, the ecosystem restrictions and the potential for eye strain due to low PWM frequency are important considerations for any prospective buyer.
