Following a six-month optimization sprint, RPCS3 developer Whatcookie has released a major update for the Arm branch of the PlayStation 3 emulator. The patch brings significant improvements to Arm-based handhelds, including the Ayn Odin 2. According to the developer, average performance has increased by 60%, while power efficiency has improved by 25%.
CPU and GPU Bottlenecks Addressed
The update resolves a critical issue involving a flood of unoptimized x86 wait instructions, which previously caused significant slowdowns. This specific fix accounts for 25% of the total performance gain. The remaining 35% improvement stems from continued code optimizations tailored for Arm architecture.
A key technical shift is that RPCS3 is no longer CPU-bound on modern Arm devices. Frame rate dips are now primarily caused by limited GPU horsepower rather than the difficulty of translating PS3's Cell CPU instructions to an Arm chip. This means that for stable gameplay, the graphics subsystem has become the primary bottleneck.
Gaming Experience and Compatibility
On the Ayn Odin 2, which previously struggled with certain titles, games like Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge are now playable. In cases like Demon's Souls, the experience is smooth, confirming the shift from CPU limitations to GPU limitations.
The developer believes that budget-priced Arm-based handhelds will soon achieve full compatibility with the PlayStation 3 library via RPCS3 emulation. However, it is important to note that these optimizations do not immediately extend to current Android forks of RPCS3; future updates for mobile versions are expected to include these improvements.
