Roman Sands RE:Build is a brilliantly cracked, playful, and gloomy "service industry adventure" consisting of two exquisitely grim games locked in a collapsing binary orbit. Developed by Arbitrary Metric and published by Serenity Forge, it is a work of striking asymmetry that defies easy categorization.
The game is split into two distinct yet mirroring experiences. The first is a hyperactive, time-looping hotel job simulator. You navigate a garish, phantasmagorical resort, catering to cartoonishly awful guests while racing against an approaching sun. The aesthetic is a deliberate pastiche of "breakcore meets vaporwave," utilizing a palette of pinks and purples. The design is intentionally obnoxious, using hyperkinetic SFX and constant HUD notifications to mimic the dopamine-driven rush of gacha mechanics and level-up chimes, effectively characterizing the player as a pliant, hypnotized thrall to the service industry.
The second half shifts into a meticulous ocean base exploration sim, steeped in cybernetic horror and the dread of decay. Here, the frantic energy of the hotel is replaced by tactile, diegetic interactions. You use wrenches and manual valves to manage oxygen and repair machinery, attempting to purge a radioactive infestation. While the hotel layer feels like a test of how much a player will debase themselves for incremental unlocks, the base layer feels like a struggle for actual survival against an indifferent, automated system.
Thematically, the two halves are bound by the concept of maintenance versus transcendence. Both environments are rife with planetary symbols, alchemy, and a fascination with the number three, creating a sense of occult mystery that bridges the divide. As the settings fragment, the boundaries between them blur; a pile of discarded luggage in the hotel finds its echo in the mounting debris of the base. The narrative suggests a larger, apocalyptic landscape of biological experiments, where the
