Rockstar Games imposes new restrictions on modding
Ahead of the anticipated release of GTA 6, Rockstar Games has updated its modding guidelines, introducing strict limitations for the community. The new rules aim to maintain control over the creative environment of their franchises.
The core principle of the updated policy is to "respect our games." Under these new terms, modders are prohibited from expanding or modifying official storylines, plots, missions, characters, or any other elements of the established continuity. Additionally, the studio has banned the combination of assets, maps, or characters from different Rockstar Games titles within a single mod.
The updated guidelines also cover several key areas:
- Multiplayer: Modding in multiplayer environments is restricted to the official Rockstar Creator Platform or requires direct licensing from the studio.
- Platforms: Modders are not allowed to modify games to operate on consoles or hardware where the titles have not been officially released.
- Third-party IP: The use of protected intellectual property from other entities—including music, brands, logos, or characters—is strictly forbidden in mods for Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption.
- Monetization: Making money from mods is only permitted through the official Rockstar Games Creator Platform.
The studio also emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward abuse, bullying, and harassment. These stringent regulations suggest that the landscape of community-made content for GTA 6 may look significantly different, and potentially more restricted, than the vast ecosystem of mods currently available for GTA 5.
