Roblox Introduces Facial Recognition for Age Verification and Launches New Kids and Select Accounts
Roblox held a roundtable with select media outlets to discuss its approach to platform safety. The focus was on the new age-based accounts launched in June 2026: Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. Details were shared by Senior Vice President and Chief Design Officer, Kazutoshi Kage.
New Accounts for Different Age Groups
The primary focus was on safety. The company explained that it does not create games itself but provides a platform and tools for millions of creators worldwide.
On Roblox (available on PC, PS5, Xbox One/PS4, Meta Quest, Android, iOS), there are over 132 million daily active users. The average time spent on the platform is two and a half hours.
Roblox Kids (Ages 5–8)
This account targets the youngest users. Chat is disabled by default, and the interface uses blue tones to visually signal a safe environment for parents.
Roblox Select (Ages 9–15)
For teenagers, chat is available but restricted to peers of similar age. The system automatically blocks interactions with users significantly older or younger, preventing unwanted contact.
Facial Recognition for Age Verification
A key safety feature is the implementation of facial recognition technology to estimate user age. Roblox positions this as a world-first initiative in the industry.
According to the company, images used for analysis are deleted immediately after verification and are not stored on servers.
Other Safety Measures
Alongside new accounts, a Family Zone was introduced where parents can play with their children and configure parental controls in real-time.
The company also plans to transition to the international IARC (International Age Rating Coalition) rating system by the second half of 2026. This will help unify age restrictions globally.
