REDMAGIC Announces 5K-Mini-LED with 5,184 Zones and 330-Hz-Dual-Mode
The new REDMAGIC monitor offers a unique combination of 5K resolution at 180 Hz and a 330-Hz-Dual-Mode for esports, featuring 5,184 dimming zones.
REDMAGIC is expanding its monitor lineup with an aggressively spec'd Mini-LED model. The new display combines 5K resolution at 180 Hz with an alternative 2K mode supporting up to 330 Hz via 330-Hz-Dual-Mode technology. The standout feature is the Mini-LED backlight, which is divided into 5,184 individually controlled dimming zones.
The Dual-Mode concept targets users who previously had to choose between high pixel density and high refresh rates. In standard operation, the monitor provides 5K resolution at 180 Hz, ideal for productivity and cinematic gaming. For competitive titles, the resolution can be reduced to enable up to 330 Hz, catering to the needs of high-speed gaming.
The backlight features 5,184 dimming zones, a significantly higher number than many current Mini-LED monitors that typically offer a few hundred to just over 2,000 zones. This high density aims to provide finer local brightness control and reduce blooming effects. While it won't reach true OLED levels due to the size of the zones relative to pixels, the high zone count should significantly minimize light halos. REDMAGIC claims a peak HDR brightness of up to 1,400 nits, which offers an advantage over many OLED gaming monitors in high-contrast scenes, though independent verification of these brightness levels is still pending.
To enhance motion clarity, the monitor utilizes progressive Backlight-Scanning technology. This technique synchronizes the backlight with the image construction to reduce motion blur and sample-and-hold effects. However, aggressive backlight strobing can often lead to a reduction in effective brightness.
The chassis is constructed entirely from aluminum, featuring a sleek design with transparent elements. The announced price in China is 6,499 Yuan (approximately $900–$1,000). There is currently no information regarding an international release or specific launch dates outside of China.
The 5,184 dimming zones, 5K resolution at 180 Hz, and the 330-Hz-Dual-Mode capability make this a formidable combination on paper. Whether the local dimming algorithms, overdrive tuning, and backlight scanning are perfectly synchronized remains to be seen, as firmware implementation is often as critical as the raw spec sheet for Mini-LED performance.
