Raspberry Pi Unveils New Programming Jig Tool to Flash Hardware Faster

Raspberry Pi has announced the release of the Programming Jig, a dedicated tool designed to flash Compute Module 5 hardware more efficiently. This single-head provisioning system automatically programs the module with an operating system and applies a security configuration.

The Programming Jig is built entirely around Raspberry Pi OS, ensuring a familiar experience for users accustomed to the Pi ecosystem. The device features two Ethernet ports: one dedicated to the Jig itself and another for connecting the Compute Module 5 being set up. Additionally, a USB-C port allows for firmware updates on the Jig.

Once configured by a developer, the process is streamlined to a simple mechanical action: inserting the module into the Jig and clamping it shut initiates the automation. The tool handles secure boot implementation, full disk encryption, and installs a bare operating system, transforming a blank board into a functional component.

Previously, the only comparable alternative was the Everypin CM5 Flash Jig, which cost roughly $2500. This high price point acted as a significant barrier for smaller outfits and individual tinkerers, alongside a lack of deep Raspberry Pi integration. The new Programming Jig is priced at approximately $600, making it an accessible solution to accelerate time-to-market for smaller product makers without breaking the bank.
