PlayStation and the end of new physical discs in 2028: what changes for players
Паника не нужна, но цифровая гигиена становится частью игровой культуры.

What was announced

PlayStation Blog stated that physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. The wording matters: this is about new releases after that date, not discs already sitting in players' homes.

The reason is direct: the industry has shifted toward digital formats. This is not a sudden reversal, but a formal acknowledgement of a trend already visible through subscriptions, digital sales, preloads and seasonal updates.

What it means for players

For part of the audience, convenience wins. A digital library is faster, does not require a disc and is easier to move across account-linked devices. For collectors, the second-hand market and players with poor internet, the change hurts.

The core risk is dependence on the store, licenses and account health. Even if games do not vanish automatically, players lose a familiar physical anchor of ownership: the box, the disc, resale and lending.

What changes for the market

Retail loses another argument, publishers gain more control over discounts, and the platform gets a cleaner digital economy. For live-service games, the transition is almost natural because they already live through patches, seasons and servers.

Single-player releases and niche collector editions are more complicated. Physical packages may shift toward souvenir boxes, art books and download codes rather than full discs.

Bottom line

Players have time before January 2028 to calmly rebuild habits: check accounts, backup email access, enable two-factor protection and decide how they feel about digital ownership. Panic is not useful, but digital hygiene is becoming part of gaming culture.
